{"id":1096,"date":"2011-03-14T12:42:47","date_gmt":"2011-03-14T16:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2011-11-18T20:07:46","modified_gmt":"2011-11-19T01:07:46","slug":"tai-chi-for-musicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=1096","title":{"rendered":"The Tai Chi Examiner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Tai Chi for Musicians<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>By Violet Li<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Performing Guitarist and Senior Artist Teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/people.vanderbilt.edu\/~joe.rea.phillips\/Phillips_Website\/Phillips_Home_Page.html\">Joe Rea Phillips<\/a> of the Blair School of Music of\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/\">Vanderbilt University<\/a> (Nashville, TN) has studied Wushu for 35 years.\u00a0 He started with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northern_Shaolin_%28martial_art%29\">Northern Shaolin<\/a> and then <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wing_Chun\">Wing Chun<\/a>.\u00a0 In 1984, Mr. Phillips studied with <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mac.com\/cbii\/iWeb\/James%20Cravens\/James%20Cravens.html\">James Cravens<\/a>, President of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chineseboxing.com\/index.html\">Chinese Boxing Institute International (CBII)<\/a> and a disciple of Chen Style Tai Chi lineage holder Grandmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chenxiaowang.com\/\">Chen Xiaowang<\/a>. Joe Rea has learned <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baguazhang\">Baquazhang<\/a>, Walu, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yang_style_tai_chi_chuan\">Yang Style Tai Chi<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chen_style_tai_chi_chuan\">Chen Style Tai Chi<\/a>. Joe Rea became a \u201csenior student\u201d of Professor Cravens in 1994. Through Professor Cravens, Mr. Phillips was introduced to Grandmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chenxiaowang.com\/\">Chen Xiaowang<\/a> and his teaching methods.\u00a0 Mr. Phillips even traveled to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/examiner\/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2009m7d21-Jet-Li--Chenjiagou\">Chen Village <\/a>with James Cravens to study with Grandmaster Chen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1113\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR262-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1113\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1113 \" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR262-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sifu Joe Rea Phillips<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1989, Sifu Phillips and a group of students established the <a href=\"http:\/\/studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu\/kungfu\/\">Vanderbilt Kung Fu Club<\/a> where Joe Rea serves as an instructor and faculty adviser.\u00a0 This club offers Chinese martial arts classes of Baguazhang, Tai Chi, Walu, and other Chinese boxing styles and hosts special workshops with James Cravens. But in 1997, Joe Rea\u2019s passion for Tai Chi led him to another venture. As a musician, he realizes that many musicians and musical students suffer from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Repetitive_strain_injury\">Repetitive Stress Injury<\/a> (RSI or Repetitive Motion Disorder).\u00a0 As a Tai Chi practitioner, he fully understands how Tai Chi can help to relieve pain from the injury and prevent RSI to occur.\u00a0 He did a study and found out that Southern Methodist\u00a0University, Webster Conservatory, and Southern Illinois\u00a0University offered Tai\u00a0Chi for credit from their theater departments.\u00a0\u00a0Syracuse\u00a0University offered Tai Chi for credit from their\u00a0school of education.\u00a0\u00a0Allison Bert,\u00a0a\u00a0guitar colleague of Joe Rea\u2019s from Syracuse University, has taught clinics in Tai\u00a0Chi\u00a0for musicians at Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music. \u00a0He presented \u201cTai Chi for Musicians\u201d to the <a href=\"http:\/\/blair.vanderbilt.edu\/\">Blair School of Music\u2019s<\/a> curriculum committee and his proposal was accepted unanimously. Sifu Phillips has been teaching this course since.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1114\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR155-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1114\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1114 \" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR155-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR155-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR155-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sifu Joe Rea works with students one-on-one<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With Joe Rea\u2019s extensive training background in Tai Chi and knowledge of musicians, \u201cTai Chi for Musicians\u201d has a very rich curriculum that includes the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Warm-ups\n<ol>\n<li>Chen       and Yang &#8211; Stretch muscles, tendons, ligaments. Work on circulation of       blood and Qi.<\/li>\n<li>Chen       joint opening exercises &#8211; very helpful for wrists and shoulders since       many musicians working to get their Qi to the fingers.<\/li>\n<li>Walu       energy exercises. Walu is referred to as a &#8220;Bridge\u201d of the       &#8220;external&#8221; to the &#8220;internal&#8221; in martial arts. It has       a few bare hand forms and others, but the core of the art consists of 44       energy exercises. Sifu Phillips finds that these energy exercises help to       get tension out shoulders and wrists. He selects 4 exercises for the       class.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Silk      Reeling exercises and Qigong\n<ol>\n<li>Grandmaster       Chen Xiaowang\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silk_reeling\">Silk       Reeling<\/a> exercises<\/li>\n<li>Silk       Reeling by fleshing out movements from the Tai Chi form<\/li>\n<li>Various       Qigong exercises (some from Chen Style lineage holder Grandmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/examiner\/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2010m4d4-Tai-Chi-Workshop-with-Grandmaster-Zhu-Tiancai\">Zhu       Tincai<\/a> and a couple from <a href=\"http:\/\/centerfortaiji.com\/about\/\">Dr.       Yang Yang<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>8       Pieces Brocade (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baduanjin\">Baduanjin<\/a><\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stillness      Posture (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zhan_zhuang\">Zhan Zhuang<\/a><\/em> )<\/li>\n<li>Form\n<ol>\n<li>Students       learn the 1st section (or six movements) of the Grandmaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/examiner\/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2009m11d22-Cheng-ManChing-Master-of-Five-Excellences\">Cheng       Man-Ch\u2019ing<\/a>\u2019s Yang short form.<\/li>\n<li>The       students do the 1st section in 4 directions on their final exam for this       course.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Study      and use as a training supplement <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chineseboxing.com\/dvd\/\">the Essence of Tai Chi<\/a><\/em>, a      DVD made by Joe Rea\u2019s teacher, Professor James Cravens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As a seasoned Tai Chi instructor, Joe Rea understands the importance of the proper posture and body alignment.\u00a0 He spends much time on one-on-one guidance and tirelessly corrects student\u2019s posture. Joe Rea said that many students took the course due to a pre-existing condition. The results of this course are quite impressive. Students with tendonitis reported that their problem improved greatly after taking this class. One semester he had a student who suffered from scoliosis who claimed improved condition after the course.\u00a0In the past fall semester, a harp student had tennis elbow and informed Joe Rea that her tennis elbow was significantly better at the end of the course.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1116\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR248-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1116\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1116 \" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR248-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR248-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR248-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sifu Joe Rea Phillips helps students&#39; posture<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tai Chi and music are different types of arts.\u00a0 But to Sifu Phillips, there are many similarities between these two art forms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Body  State: both require the body state to be soft but full of energy (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/examiner\/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2010m2d5-Taichi-Ba-Fa-by-Master-Chen-Huixian\">Peng energy<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Relaxation: a musician must resist tension to play well, just like Tai Chi will not flow with tension.<\/li>\n<li>Balance: both Tai Chi and music need physical, mental, and emotional balance to perform.<\/li>\n<li>Centeredness: Tai Chi practitioner needs to be Zhong Ding while a musician needs a focus.<\/li>\n<li>Projection: To Sifu Phillips\u00a0 a Tai Chi practitioner projects Qi and power while a musician projects to the audience.<\/li>\n<li>Unitary ( &#8220;Link together&#8221; ): Joe Rea explains that Tai Chi links with unitary motion and a musician links by smooth connection of patterns, motifs, and phrases, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Changeability or \u201cChange and Flow\u201d: Joe Rea interprets it as that Tai Chi flows like a river and a musician should always keep flowing even if there are mistakes along the way.<\/li>\n<li>Posture: a good posture is important for both.<\/li>\n<li>Concentration: Joe Rea appreciates the famous quote &#8220;Not 10,000 things (at a time), but one thing only&#8221; from Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang and thinks that this principle applies to musicians too.\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1123\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR038-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1123\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1123 \" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR038-2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR038-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20110201JR038-2.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sifu Joe Rea Phillips teaches musicians at Vanderbilt University<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>Rhythm: both music and Tai Chi have rhythm that enhances each other.<\/li>\n<li>Slow Movement: Joe Rea refers to Grandmaster Chen\u2019s saying that he moves slowly in order to move fast.
