{"id":2282,"date":"2011-05-15T00:19:34","date_gmt":"2011-05-15T04:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=2282"},"modified":"2012-01-01T18:51:31","modified_gmt":"2012-01-01T23:51:31","slug":"yogic-breath-practice-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=2282","title":{"rendered":"Breathing in This Life-Yogic Breath Practice for Wo(men)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Yogic Breath Practice for Wo(men)<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>by\u00a9 Ginger Garner MPT, ATC<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aays13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2283\" title=\"yang sheng\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aays13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a>Women need, let&#8217;s face it, more than 24 hours in a day to accomplish all that is expected of us.\u00a0 We manage the majority of households in the US, perform the overwhelming majority of all house related tasks and work, and oh yes, hold down full time jobs in and\/or outside the home.<\/p>\n<p>Since WWII, when women left the home for the workforce, we have had to shoulder more than 2 full time jobs.\u00a0 And if you are a mother, then add a third full time job.<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality is still a far off notion, although the pay gap is decreasing (a reported 73 to 78 cents to a man\u2019s dollar, but only if you are childless) and men are increasingly taking on roles as involved fathers and partners who share in household management, chores, and childrearing.\u00a0 The portrait of a father differs largely from the snapshot of one from the 1960&#8217;s, for example.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s father is more hands-on than ever, many opting to be stay-at-home dads while moms go to work &#8211; and with the advent of telecommuting, more men and women are finding new (and long overdue) flexibility in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post can help you maintain sanity in your busy life and come closer to attaining that enigma of work\/life balance &#8211; through learning to breathe better. A complete breathing practice &#8211; beneficial for men and women alike &#8211; is available for free.\u00a0 For your education and information, you can download these free excerpts from my texts on medical therapeutic yoga, previously available only to health care professionals who studied the Professional Yoga Therapy method with me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidelines for Practice <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each of these breath practices serves a specific purpose.\u00a0 For that reason, they cannot be practiced all at the same time.\u00a0 Instead, choose which ones best suit you and follow these 3 guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Always begin with the abdominal breath. When in doubt, return to the abdominal breath for calm relaxation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Always use the TATD breath for performing active tasks, such as yoga postures, exercise, lifting, or playing sports. The TATD creates a powerhouse of trunk\/ab strength and spine control &#8211; whether you are a runner, golfer, kayaker, or a mom who lifts and chases toddlers all day long.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Always finish with at least 5 minutes of relaxation pose.\u00a0 This can be done lying down or reclining &#8211; generally relaxing &#8211; anywhere (except while driving in your car). Take the 5 minutes to decompress and clear you mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breath Techniques<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gingergarner.com\/pdf\/Abdominal%20Breath%20Blog.pdf\">Abdominal Breath<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cgold standard\u201d breath method in medicine for what is known as relaxed, diaphragmatic breathing.\u00a0 This breath is a daily staple for thriving. It should be mastered before attempting any other breath type. A word of caution though- this breath is not to be used for a yoga practice because it does not support the spine and puts you at risk for injury. The TATD breath should be used for all vigorous exercise, yoga postures included. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gingergarner.com\/pdf\/Abdominal%20Breath%20Blog.pdf\">Download Abdominal Breath<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gingergarner.com\/pdf\/Three%20part%20Breath%20blog.pdf\">Three (or Four) Part Breath <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This breath can be practiced once you have mastered the abdominal breath.\u00a0 It increases alveolar ventilation (breathing) and O2 exchange.\u00a0 It can dramatically raise energy levels, so much that you have to take care not to become dizzy (hyperventilate) while practicing this breath.\u00a0 Take special care not to chest breathe, but only use the abdominal or TATD breath to complete this more difficult breath technique. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gingergarner.com\/pdf\/Three%20part%20Breath%20blog.pdf\">Download the Three (or Four) Part Breath <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gingergarner.com\/pdf\/Sandbag%20Breathing%20Blog.pdf\">Sandbag Breath<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A breath technique which prevents and treats hyperventilation and states of anxiety or panic.\u00a0 It brings calm and deepens the breath, thereby increasing O2 exchange which ultimately brings better nutrition and vitality to the tissues of the body and mind.
