In fact, of all my fourteen philosophies, this one is most important\u2026.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0061583251\/ref=nosim\/getrichslo-20\/\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">No surprise then that for the past couple of years, one of my favorite blogs has been Gretchen Rubin\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.happiness-project.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\">The Happiness Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">. Rubin is a former lawyer who abandoned her promising high-paying career to follow her bliss: She decided to become a writer. She started her blog as a part of a year-long experiment to find new ways to be happy. She\u2019s now turned that experience into a best-selling book.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0061583251\/ref=nosim\/getrichslo-20\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Happiness Project<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> (the book) <\/span>was released in late December. I\u2019d hoped to review it when it was published, but work on my own book got in the way. Last week, as I was happily soaking up the sun in the jungles of Belize, I <em>finally<\/em> found time to read Rubin\u2019s book. It\u2019s fantastic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">The Happiness Project<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I\u2019ll admit that, on paper, <em>The Happiness Project<\/em> may seem sort of lame. Rubin decided to spend one year consciously pursuing happiness. Each month, she tackled one specific aspect of life \u2014 marriage, work, attitude, and so on \u2014 and during that month, she attempted to meet a handful of related resolutions she hoped would make her happier. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Her financial resolutions for July, for instance, were about money. Rubin is an \u201cunder-buyer\u201d; she\u2019s frugal by nature. For this month, she wanted to indulge in a modest splurge, buy needful things, spend out (meaning to actually use the stuff she has), and give something up (Rubin stopped obsessing over office supplies).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Fortunately, the book <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> lame. Rubin\u2019s style is warm and engaging. Though <em>The Happiness Project<\/em> includes tons of info from research into happiness and well-being, this data isn\u2019t presented in a dull, dry way; it\u2019s neatly woven into Rubin\u2019s account of her day-to-day progress toward happiness (or lack thereof). She shares the research in casual prose, not in academic jargon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Among my favorite findings, I bookmarked these:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cThe most effective way to judge whether a particular course of action will make you happy in the future is to ask people who are following that course of action right now if they\u2019re happy and assume that you\u2019ll feel the same way.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">You can do <em>anything<\/em> you want, but you can\u2019t do <em>everything<\/em> you want. This insight is remarkably similarly to the one I had <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.getrichslowly.org\/blog\/2008\/11\/24\/you-cant-always-get-what-you-want-the-dark-side-of-personal-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\">a couple of years ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">, when I realized that I can <em>buy<\/em> anything I want, but can\u2019t buy everything I want.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cOne of the best ways to make <em>yourself<\/em> happy is to make <em>other people<\/em> happy. One of the best ways to make <em>other people<\/em> happy is to be happy <em>yourself<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">\u201cBest is good, better is best.\u201d In other words, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.getrichslowly.org\/blog\/2009\/11\/23\/the-perfect-is-the-enemy-of-the-good-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\">the perfect is the enemy of the good<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">. When you spend too much time pursuing the best, you\u2019re bound to be unhappy.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201c<em>Money<\/em> doesn\u2019t buy happiness the way <em>good health<\/em> doesn\u2019t buy happiness. When money or health is a problem, you think of little else; when it\u2019s not a problem, you don\u2019t think much about it. Both money and health contribute to happiness mostly in the negative; the lack of them brings much more unhappiness than possessing them brings happiness.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">I loved this tip from a reader of Rubin\u2019s blog: \u201c[I] change my passwords to a goal that I\u2019ve been working on, or an achievement I want. They become a constant reminder of my goals, my dreams, of what I want to achieve.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><em>The Happiness Project<\/em> is filled with anecdotes: from Rubin\u2019s life, from the comments on her blog, and from the people she meets. These stories add a lot of color to the topics she covers, and help to show how complex happiness can be. For example, from the chapter on money, here\u2019s a story that made me laugh:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">While I was thinking hard about the relationship between money and happiness, I struck up a conversation with a fellow guest at a bridal shower. I told her that I was trying to figure out ways to \u201cBuy some happiness.\u201d (As I explained the issue, it began to dawn on me, dimly, that I might be becoming a happiness bore.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">She became quite indignant at my suggestion. \u201cThat\u2019s so wrong!\u201d she said. \u201cMoney can\u2019t buy happiness!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t think so?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cI\u2019m the perfect example. I don\u2019t make much money. A few years back, I took my savings and bought a horse. My mother and everyone told me I was crazy. But that horse makes me incredibly happy \u2014 even though I end up spending all my extra money on him.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cBut,\u201d I said, confused, \u201cmoney <em>did<\/em> make you happy. It makes you so happy to have a horse!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cBut I don\u2019t have any money,\u201d she answered. \u201cI spent it all.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201cRight, because you used it to <em>buy a horse<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">She shook her head and gave up on me. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Rubin undertook her happiness project because she realized, \u201cI wasn\u2019t as happy as I could be, and my life wasn\u2019t going to change unless I made it change.\u201d This realization is <em>so<\/em> important. Too many folks sit back, waiting things for to improve. That\u2019s what I used to do with money. But it wasn\u2019t until I actually too charge of my own life that I was able to defeat debt and build wealth. And it wasn\u2019t until Rubin decided to be responsible for her own happiness that she was able to make the little changes that brough about increased well-being.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Smiley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2692 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Smiley-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a>Making resolutions<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The section on \u201cfinding fun\u201d \u2014 one of the subjects of chapter 5 (\u201dMay: Be Serious About Play\u201d) \u2014 literally moved me to tears. As I read about Rubin\u2019s love of children\u2019s literature, how she rediscovered her passion for scrapbooking, and her general quest to make room in her life for fun, I realize that\u2019s something I\u2019ve been missing. For the past few years, everything I\u2019ve done has been very very Adult. I\u2019ve reaped adult rewards for adult effort, but it hasn\u2019t been a whole lot of fun. I need to make room in my life to enjoy myself just for the sake of pleasure. So, that\u2019s one of my goals for the next few months: Find more fun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">But Rubin draws a distinction between goals and resolutions:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">You <em>hit<\/em> a goal, but <em>keep<\/em> a resolution. \u201cRun a marathon\u201d makes a good goal. It\u2019s specific, easy to measure success, and once you\u2019ve done it, you\u2019ve done it. \u201cSing in the morning\u201d and \u201cExercise better\u201d are better cast as resolutions. You won\u2019t wake up one day and find that you\u2019ve achieved it. It\u2019s something you have to resolve to do every day, forever.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">As you know, I\u2019m a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.getrichslowly.org\/blog\/2007\/12\/31\/dont-make-resolutions-set-goals-for-2008\/\" target=\"_blank\">fan of goals <\/a>and, generally, I refuse to set resolutions. But I see Rubin\u2019s point. As a result, I\u2019ve decided to set some resolutions of my own. I\u2019ll be tracking the following with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joesgoals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\">Joe\u2019s Goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Eat real food (avoid processed food and excess sugar).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Be active (get regular exercise).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Avoid strong drinks (reduce intake of alcohol and caffeine).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Read for pleasure (make time to read comics and science fiction, etc).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Kiss Kris (be sweet and loving to my wife).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Write daily (focus on my calling).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Be tidy (I\u2019m a slob by nature; this will be tough).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Purge Stuff (continue to reduce the Stuff in my life).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Be friendly (spend time with friends, and be amiable to people I meet).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Be true to myself (or, in other words, \u201cbe J.D.\u201d instead of trying to be who I think other folks want me to be).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Some of these will be easier than others. I write nearly every day because I cannot help myself; I\u2019m drawn to it. Tidiness? Real food? Being true to myself? These things will be tougher, but I really think they\u2019ll make me happy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #000000;\">I\u2019m tempted to say that <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0061583251\/ref=nosim\/getrichslo-20\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Happiness Project<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0061583251\/ref=nosim\/getrichslo-20\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a>is one of the best books I\u2019ve ever read, but I know that\u2019s just me engaging in hyperbole. Instead, it\u2019s probably better to say that this was the perfect book for me to read for where I am in life. It spoke to me. I can\u2019t say for sure that it will speak to <em>you<\/em>, but I\u2019m willing to bet that for many GRS readers, a personal happiness project could lead to increased wealth \u2014 financial and otherwise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">This article was originally published on March 1, 2010, by J.
