{"id":3146,"date":"2011-07-15T00:49:13","date_gmt":"2011-07-15T04:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=3146"},"modified":"2011-11-19T00:34:09","modified_gmt":"2011-11-19T05:34:09","slug":"a-simple-tai-chi-routine-eases-arthritis-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=3146","title":{"rendered":"The Taiji Examiner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">A simple Tai Chi routine eases Arthritis pain<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">by Violet L<\/span>i<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, 84-year old Norman Seligman moved into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fvchesterfield.com\/\">Friendship Village Chesterfield<\/a>, an upscale retirement home in the St. Louis County, Missouri.\u00a0 Even though he had no idea what Tai Chi is, he attended a Tai Chi class offered at the Village (an YMCA Outreach program) upon the advice of his friends. He thought his teacher was cheerful and entertaining and he liked the relaxing feeling of doing Tai Chi so he returned the following week.\u00a0 During the second class, the instructor taught a new simple routine (see the video on the left-hand-side) focused on breathing.\u00a0 Norman tried it and did not feel Qi was moving.\u00a0 The instructor advised him to be mindful.\u00a0 After a few repetitions, Norman happily announced that the arthritis pain in his right hand was gone.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3148\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/class-20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3148\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/class-20-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/class-20-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/class-20-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/class-20.jpg 1630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Norm (front center) and his class at Friendship Village<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/chenchen-wang\/19\/a70\/530\">Dr. Chen Chen Wang<\/a>, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tufts.edu\/med\/\">Tufts University School of Medicine<\/a>, is an internationally renowned scientist and specializes in rheumatoid diseases.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rheumatic.theclinics.com\/issues?issue_key=S0889-857X(10)X0006-0\">Feb Issue<\/a> of <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rheumatic.theclinics.com\/issues?issue_key=S0889-857X(10)X0006-0\">Rheumatic Diseases Clinics of North America<\/a>, <\/em><\/strong><strong>Dr. Chen Chen Wang published her study on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdconsult.com\/das\/citation\/body\/242966100-2\/jorg=journal&amp;source=&amp;sp=23921702&amp;sid=0\/N\/23921702\/1.html?issn=0889857X\">Tai Chi and Rheumatic Diseases<\/a><\/em>.<\/strong> According to her, Tai chi is a complex multi-component mind-body exercise. Many studies have provided evidence that Tai Chi benefits patients with a variety of chronic disorders. This form of mind-body exercise enhances cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, balance, and physical function and seems to be associated with reduced stress, anxiety, and depression and improved quality of life. Thus, despite certain limitations in the evidence, Tai Chi can be recommended to patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia as a complementary and alternative medical approach. This study was funded by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nccam.nih.gov\/\">National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine<\/a> of the National Institutes of Health (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science?_ob=ArticleURL&amp;_udi=B75JW-51MHP36-1&amp;_user=10&amp;_coverDate=02%2F28%2F2011&amp;_rdoc=1&amp;_fmt=high&amp;_orig=gateway&amp;_origin=gateway&amp;_sort=d&amp;_docanchor=&amp;view=c&amp;_searchStrId=1747682923&amp;_rerunOrigin=google&amp;_acct=C000050221&amp;_version=1&amp;_urlVersion=0&amp;_userid=10&amp;md5=ecc1e2764bae0115aac84228eab03180&amp;searchtype=a#gs1\">R21AT003621<\/a>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rheumatology.org\/ref\/awards\/fy2013_ria.pdf\">American College of Rheumatology Health Professional Investigator Award<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/bostonpeppercenter.org\/\">Boston Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Arthritis Foundation, Northern California Chapter (AFNC) acknowledges that<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthritis is the number one cause of physical disability in adults<\/strong>.\u00a0 Range-of-Motion (ROM), stretching &amp; strengthening exercises are some of the best tools people living with arthritis have to retain or improve their joint functionality, mobility and overall health status.\u00a0 As part of its public health mission, AF has created several scientific evidence-based physical activity programs including Tai Chi.\u00a0 \u00a0It provides grant through Andrew &amp; Gloria Guasch Memorial Community Care \/ Patient Education Grant Program to bring the life-changing programs to low-income individuals for free.\u00a0 Recently it announced that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohlone.edu\/org\/collegeadvancement\/pressreleases\/20092010\/20100420maychenhonored.html\">Sifu May Chen<\/a> of Ohlong College,  California, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/examiner\/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2010m4d18-Winners-of-12-th-World-Congress-of-Qigong--TCM-Awards\">Tai Chi Master of the Year by 2010 World Congress of Qigong &amp; TCM<\/a>, receive this grant.\u00a0 She will teach Tai Chi twice a week at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fremont.gov\/index.aspx?nid=351\">the Fremont City Senior Center<\/a> for a year.<\/p>\n<p>In Norm\u2019s case, he suffered from Arthritis for close to ten years, mostly in his right hand and left knee.\u00a0 With Tai Chi practice, his pain subsides.\u00a0 He is taught to breath in a Small Heavenly Circulation method (Xiao Zhou Tian) in which the Qi travels from Hui-Yin (at the bottom of the body trunk, perineum) via Ming-Men (near the spine and around the waist), and to Bai-Hui (at the top of the head) while inhaling, and the Qi goes down from the Ren-zhong (the indentation between nose and mouth) via the center of the chest, and down to lower Dan Tian. He needs to focus on the Qi movement as he practices.<\/p>\n<p>Since this little routine is working so well for Norm, he thought that he could practice it while watching TV.\u00a0 But it did not work as predicted by his teacher.\u00a0 According to Norm, he has to concentrate and focus on the Qi movement to make it work.\u00a0 After all, Tai Chi is a mind-body-breathing exercise.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/examiner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-496\" title=\"Violet Li\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/examiner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"88\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a>[Violet Li <\/strong>\u2013 an award winning journalist, certified Tai Chi instructor, and certified Heart Zone Trainer, has studied Tai Chi, Qigong, and heart fitness with many grandmasters and experts, and has taught Tai Chi, Qigong, and other fitness programs to various groups.
