The highest sage is like water.
\nWater benefits the ten thousand beings
\nYet contends with no one.
\nIt flows in places that people reject.
\nIn this way it is close to the Dao.
\nIn her dwelling the sage values the earth,
\nIn her spirit she values
\nThe qualities of a deep pool.
\nIn her dealings with others
\nShe values human kindness and benevolence.
\nIn her speech she values truthfulness.
\nIn leading others she values fairness and peace.
\nIn serving others she values effectiveness.
\nIn her actions she values proper timing.
\nBecause she does not go against nature
\nShe is free from blame.\u00a0(8)<\/p>\n

Under heaven there is nothing more yielding
\nand soft than water.
\nYet for attacking what is hard and stiff
\nThere is nothing better.
\nIn this way, the weak can vanquish the strong
\nAnd the soft can overcome the hard.
\nUnder heaven, there is no one who does not know this,
