Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man&#8217;s sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in magazines for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this &#8216;anonymous&#8217; poem winging across the Internet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> What are you thinking .. . when you&#8217;re looking at me?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Who dribbles his food .. . &#8230; . . and makes no reply.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> When you say in a loud voice . .&#8217;I do wish you&#8217;d try!&#8217;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Who, resisting or not . . . &#8230; lets you do as you will,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Is that what you&#8217;re thinking?. .Is that what you see?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Then open your eyes, nurse .you&#8217;re not looking at me.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I&#8217;ll tell you who I am . . . . .. As I sit here so still,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> As I do at your bidding, .. . . . as I eat at your will.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I&#8217;m a small child of Ten . .with a father and mother,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Brothers and sisters .. . . .. . who love one another<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A young boy of Sixteen . . . .. with wings on his feet<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Dreaming that soon now . . .. . . a lover he&#8217;ll meet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A groom soon at Twenty . . . ..my heart gives a leap.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Remembering, the vows .. .. .that I promised to keep.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> At Twenty-Five, now . . . . .I have young of my own.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A man of Thirty . .. . . . . My young now grown fast,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Bound to each other . . .. With ties that should last.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> At Forty, my young sons .. .have grown and are gone,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> But my woman is beside me . . to see I don&#8217;t mourn.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> At Fifty, once more, .. &#8230;Babies play &#8217;round my knee,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Again, we know children . . . . My loved one and me.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Dark days are upon me . . . . My wife is now dead.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I look at the future &#8230; . . . . I shudder with dread.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> For my young are all rearing .. . . young of their own.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And I think of the years . . . And the love that I&#8217;ve known.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I&#8217;m now an old man . . . . . . .. and nature is cruel.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> It&#8217;s jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The body, it crumbles .. .. . grace and vigour, depart.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> But inside this old carcass . A young man still dwells,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And now and again . . . . . my battered heart swells<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I remember the joys . . . . .. . I remember the pain.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And I&#8217;m loving and living . . . . . . . life over again.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I think of the years, all too few . . .. gone too fast.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> So open your eyes, people .. . . . .. . . open and see.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Not a cranky old man .<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. &#8230;. . ME!!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The best and most beautiful things of this world can&#8217;t be seen or touched.
