When your body is in a state of constant, low-level inflammation, you may feel sad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recent research is encouraging, and shows that feeling sad or depressed is not just \u201cin your head.\u201d The stigma of depression has ruined many lives, and this stigma has created barriers to getting help. For example, a mother will not easily admit to feeling depressed for fear that social services will show up at her front door to take her children away. Military veterans risk damaging or losing their career or chance for upward mobility in rank if they admit to feeling less than stellar in the psycho-emotional department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The recent news underscores that depression is not a weakness or something you did, but rather a complex state of events in the body that happened to you. \u00a0Feeling depressed is nothing to be ashamed of, and certainly should not be hidden or \u201cswept under the proverbial rug.\u201d \u00a0If you have inflammation in your body, which is easily identified with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/drhyman.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/11\/is-your-body-burning-up-with-hidden-inflammation-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">blood test,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0you are at serious risk for developing chronic disease, not just depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other disease processes are connected to inflammation levels in the body as well, including premature aging and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23160967\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23101436\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cardiopulmonary disease<\/span><\/a>, metabolic disorders like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23160966\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0neurological disease, some types of cancer, and even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23017723\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">autoimmune diseases<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Read more about the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?p=8699\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">role of inflammation in accelerated aging<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A review article presents the science of stress and depression (Littrell, 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stress\u00a0decreases immune function, activating monocytes and macrophages that release inflammatory cytokines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Studies have shown that those induced by stress show signs of\u00a0depression, correlated with high levels of inflammatory cytokines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Animal and human studies show that if you infuse the body with inflammatory cytokines, they present with signs of depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Depression reflects an inflammatory state in the brain (brain-derived neurotrophic factor is likely involved). An inflammatory state in the brain can be induced by inflammatory cytokines in the\u00a0periphery\u00a0or by\u00a0psychological\u00a0stressors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psychosocial stress and depression contribute to a greater risk for\u00a0infection, prolonged infectious episodes, and\u00a0delayed\u00a0wound\u00a0healing, all processes that can fuel pro-inflammatory cytokine production. However, stress and depression can also directly provoke pro-inflammatory cytokine production in the absence of infection or injury (Kiecolt-Glaser, 2010).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are You Depressed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you are feeling any of the depressive symptoms, seek help. \u00a0Take this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/depression-health-check\/default.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">QUICK QUIZ\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to see if you are feeling more than just sad or down. \u00a0Persistent\u00a0stress, trauma, adipose tissue\/obesity, and\/or pain can also be factors in creating chronic inflammation in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What Can You Do?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/drhyman.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/11\/is-your-body-burning-up-with-hidden-inflammation-2\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CRP test<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can be a first step in identifying inflammation in the body, which puts you at risk for depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other proactive measures you can take are diet, exercise, and movement with meditation therapies, like yoga. \u00a0Stress management is an important benefit of practicing yoga, since it has been shown to affect the inflammatory process in the body.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?attachment_id=9167\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9167\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9167\" alt=\"exercise\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/exercise-195x300.jpg\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/exercise-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/exercise.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yoga\u00a0and\u00a0meditation\u00a0have been studied to assess their role in decreasing systemic inflammation. There was a study done to compare markers of inflammation in novice and experienced yoga practitioners to assess the potential of yoga\u2019s stress-reduction benefits. Across a battery of inflammatory assays,\u00a060% of novices produced higher levels of inflammatory markers compared to 24% of experts at baseline levels.\u00a0 And 40% of experts produced low levels of inflammatory products compared to 0% of novices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We know the science behind\u00a0diaphragmatic\u00a0breathing\u00a0and it\u2019s ability to regulate the autonomic nervous system (ANS) by way of its proximity to the vagus nerve, as well as the sympathetic chain.\u00a0 And we are capable of teaching awareness or \u201cmindfulness\u201d of the body\u2019s physiological responses (muscular tension, rapid breath, actions\/reactions). The practice of controlled breath acts to down-regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and easing respiration (Sengupta 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diet\u00a0is another way we can alter the inflammation in our bodies. \u00a0Diets that promote inflammation are high in refined starches, sugar, saturated and trans-fats, and low in omega-3 fatty acids, natural antioxidants and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains\u00a0(Kiecolt-Glaser 2010).<a href=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/?attachment_id=9169\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9169\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9169\" alt=\"peppers\" src=\"http:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/peppers-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/peppers-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yang-sheng.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/peppers.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Higher fruit and vegetable intake are associated with lower oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways in the body. Refined sugars and starches can rapidly alter blood glucose levels. This postprandial hyperglycemia can increase production of free radicals as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines (Kiecolt-Glaser 2010).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Studies have shown that nutraceuticals can affect the inflammatory process in the body. Turmeric (or curcumin), ginger and cinnamon have been shown to alter the inflammatory pathways (Aggarwal 2010).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Other spice nutraceuticals may also have an affect on obesity and insulin resistance by way of their effect on inflammatory pathways.
